- Getting Indexed: Search engines like Google and Bing use crawlers in their algorithmic search results to find pages. Web pages linked from other search engine indexed pages are found automatically and thus are excluded. Crawlers look at a lot of different factors while crawling through a site, and exclude various pages, and index a few. Sometimes, the distance of a particular page from its site’s root directory decides if that page gets crawled or not.
- Preventing Crawling: Webmasters instruct spiders against crawling to certain files through the robots.txt file present in the root directory of the domain to avoid and filter unwanted content in the search indexes. Although a page can be directly excluded from the database of a search engine by using a tag called meta robots, which is specific to robots. Firstly, the search engine visits a site and looks at the robot.txt file in the root directory. Thus, it is the first file crawled. Then, the robot.txt file gets dissected by the search engine, and it instructs the robot not to crawl the files it excludes.
